With its restored steel-and-glass Art Deco tower and marquee, Ellsworth’s Grand stands out and symbolizes Hancock County’s vibrant performing arts scene. The landmark theater, Schoodic Arts for All, Opera House Arts and New Surry Theatre have temporarily closed, canceled or postponed programming indefinitely. Others are forging ahead.
At The Grand, Executive Director Nick Turner says the “Sound of Music” production was in the final rehearsal phase and all the costumes had been made when Maine’s rising coronavirus cases and urgent call for social distancing prompted the theater to close its doors March 13. At the time, the six competing “Dancing with the Ellsworth Stars” teams were well along in practicing their routines for the April 25 show that has been put off.
Meanwhile, Turner and Business Manager Jennifer Trowbridge have been working from home to secure federal Emergency Injury Disaster Payroll Protection Program loans. The theater’s other two full-time staffers and six part-timers have been furloughed.
“We will do ‘Sound of Music’ and we will do ‘Dancing with the Ellsworth Stars.’ We just don’t know when,” Turner said last week.
